Effective steps to address the continuing spread of salinity

WALN is seeking input on the most effective steps WA Government can make to address the continuing spread of salinity?

It’s now more than six months since the WA Auditor General slammed the state government for its lack of action on salinity in south-western Australia – a problem estimated to cost agriculture $500 million per year, plus untold environmental damage.

WALN Chair, Keith Bradby attended a Salinity Workshop at Murdoch University on 5 December. The purpose of the workshop was to review the State’s directions for the management of dryland salinity arising from the Office of the Auditor Generals (OAG) mid-year review.

WALN will be compiling a comprehensive report on the issue and is asking its members and the wider landcare community to express their views on –

WALN Chair, Keith Bradby and friend Andrea Gaynor have written a short essay entitled ‘Soil Salinity in Australia: A Slow Motion Crisis’ providing critical comment on the current state of dryland salinity management in WA.

In Keith’s words ‘After forty years working to combat large scale degradation in south-western Australia I’m still gob-smacked by the callous indifference of successive governments to the scale of the tragedy unfolding around us.’
