WA Landcare Network (WALN) today launched a new insurance scheme tailored to the landcare community of WA. Designed specifically for groups at the grass roots level, the new insurance scheme uses collective bargaining to significantly lower costs, providing affordable insurance cover and allowing community groups helping our environment to get on with the job.
For a number of years the community landcare sectors has been calling for cost effective insurance that provides adequate protection for group members, particularly in the volunteer space. The new insurance offer, modelled off similar schemes in the Eastern States, delivers a program that suits both small volunteer groups and larger incorporated not for profits, who employ a number of landcare professionals.
In a media statement WALN Chair, Keith Bradby said ‘The scheme was aimed at giving landcare groups the confidence that they are properly covered for the work they do at an affordable price, easing the worry and enabling them to get on with what they do best – grassroots landcare! WALN is pleased to be able to provide this valuable support to the many community groups working to protect and conserve the State’s natural assets’.
The WALN Insurance Scheme works in partnership with Ceneta Insurance Service Inc to provide insurance tailored specifically to the landcare community and suiting a range of landcare groups. Public Liability and Volunteer Workers coverage plus Association Liability (if applicable) covering a range of risks including Professional Indemnity, Officers & Directors Liability is now available through the Scheme.
Similar insurance schemes already operating in the NSW, Queensland and Victoria have proved very popular with landcare groups, with over 500 groups benefiting so far, many with their insurance premiums halved.
To be eligible for the WALN Insurance Scheme landcare groups must first sign up as WALN member groups. WALN Membership is open to any community group with and interest in landcare including those organisations caring for the State’s urban and rural bushland, waterways, wetlands, natural parks, reserves, agricultural landscapes, soils and coastal areas.
WALN encourages groups to sign up as members not only to take advantage of the insurance offer, but also to benefit from a state-wide network of like minded people. WALN not only connects landcare groups of all shapes and sizes, it provides landcare information and resources, and a collective voice for landcare across the State, assisting with funding and capacity’.
